Welcome to the Busted Trail Saloon. Behind the bar there’s whiskey, there’s ladies yonder, and the men at the poker table are from the We Deal in Lead Podcast. Folks from out of town may want to sit down and play a hand, or mayhap listen to an old timer spin a yarn or two. Whatever the reason for comin’ in, stick around, holster yer weapons, and rest your boots.
A part of the Movie Podcast Network, We Deal in Lead is a podcast focusing on westerns, big and small. From the golden era, featuring John Wayne, Glenn Ford, and James Stewart, to the Spaghetti’s with Clint Eastwood, and then off to hills the modern westerns like Silverado, Tombstone, and Appaloosa, we review and discuss the great wild west until the cows come home. Hell, we even get into some TV here and there.
The lead dealers were without Tennessee Two Guns on this episode, but the posse survived the night. Episode 5 features yet another Cohen Brothers’ masterpiece, a remake of a beloved classic. Originally released in 1969, True Grit was directed by Henry Hathaway and stars John Wayne as the lovable, crotchety Rooster Cogburn, with Kim Darby as Mattie Ross and musician Glen Campbell as LaBoeuf.
But this town isn’t big enough for the both of them.
In 2010, True Grit was released, this time directed by the Cohen Brothers and staring Jeff Bridges as Rooster, Matt Damon as LaBoeuf, Josh Brolin as the villain Tom Chaney, and newcomer and absolute joy Hailee Steinfeld as young Mattie Ross.
Which movie delivers best? Does the era of classic westerns bring charm which outweighs the technical achievement of the remake? Which Rooster, which Ross, and which villains take the seats at the bar while the others skulk in the corner? We have our opinions, so give your own the comments section.
